Frequently asked questions about interpreting

What is the difference between translation and interpreting?

Contrary to translation services, which comprise writing content from one language into another, interpreting involves orally translating from one language to another. When requesting interpreting services, it is important that you indicate what type of service you need given that there are different solutions for a variety of situations.

When would I need simultaneous interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting is usually requested for large events, such as conferences and seminars where speeches need to be reformulated into different languages using technical equipment and under specific conditions, such as soundproof booths for interpreters and individual headphones for attendees. This allows speeches to be followed without interruptions, with interpreters translating what is said at the same time, i.e. simultaneously.

What are the technical requirements for simultaneous interpreting?

If the venue where simultaneous interpreting is to be provided does not have the proper technical conditions, soundproof booths will need to be rented and installed for the interpreters (one for each language pair) and headphones purchased for the audience.

When would I need consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting is usually requested for work meetings, press conferences, smaller events or when using equipment isn’t feasible, such as on-site visits. In this case, the interpreter is in the room, or with the speakers, and interprets what is being said into the desired language in intervals, taking notes to ensure the faithful reproduction of what is being said. Although this solution is time consuming, it is more practical because it does not require the use the technical equipment.

When would I need whispered interpreting?

Whispered interpreting is the best solution when only one person needs to follow what is being said in a foreign language. In these situations, which more often than not are business meetings, the interpreter sits next to the listener and whispers what is being said in real time. This type of interpreting can only be carried out for short periods as it is very demanding.

When would I need escort interpreting?

Escort interpreting is used when visiting a company, for product demonstrations or on diplomatic visits. In this situation, the interpreter facilitates communication between participants, translating what is being said and enabling the immediate clarification or explanation of any issues.
This type of interpreting can only be carried out for short periods as it is very demanding.

When would I need telephone interpreting?

Telephone interpreting is used when you need to urgently and directly speak to people who are in different countries and do not share a common language. The use of advanced technology solutions facilitates negotiation and makes it easier to contact someone in person, allowing you to easily overcome language barriers and the distance between you at a lower cost given that the interpreter doesn’t need to travel to your location.
After establishing the connection, the interpreter translates what is said to each listener in turn, resulting in a conversation that is very similar to that of an everyday telephone conversation.

What information do I need to provide when requesting interpreting services?

Just as with all language services, you must indicate the languages involved in the interpreting assignment. Besides indicating the type of interpreting service required, you’ll also need to indicate the city, venue, date and time of the event. We will also need to know how many speakers and assistants there will be, for technical reasons.
If you have reference material available, it should be provided in order to help the interpreting teams better prepare.

What else should be taken into account for interpreting services?

Given the physical and mental toll the level of concentration required to interpret takes, there are several aspects that must be taken into account when putting together interpreting teams. To this end, we will always propose the most appropriate solution, based on the information you provide, to ensure quality and the satisfaction of all participants and stakeholders in the process. You will also need to cover the costs of any travel and/or accommodation for the interpreters, should the interpreting services involve the need to travel.
